It’s the middle of winter here at the Pacific Northwest.  Short two weeks ago our two winter-flowering shrubs were releasing their powerful sweet fragrance into the air in the courtyard and alongside the house.

One of them is the fragrant sweet box (Sarcococca ruscifolia) – for us the vanilla bush because of its scent – with its little white flowers and black berries; the other is the viburnum (Viburnum × bodnantense ‘Dawn’) with its tiny pretty pink flowers on bare stems.

But no one told the flowers it’s winter – colors are appearing everywhere to brighten the many rainy days.

Tél közepét írjuk itt, Amerika északnyugati részén, a Csendes-óceán partján.  Röpke két héttel ezelőtt az előkertben és a házunk mellett a télen virágzó bokraink erős, édes illatával volt tele a levegő.  Az egyik az oválislevelű bogyóspuszpáng (Sarcococca ruscifolia) – mi az illata miatt vanília bokornak hívjuk – kis fehér virágokkal és fekete bogyókkal; a másik a kikeleti bangita (Viburnum × bodnantense ‘Dawn’) pici csinos rózsaszín virágokkal a csupasz ágakon.

De senki nem mondta a virágoknak, hogy tél van – már színek jelennek meg mindenütt, hogy beragyogják az esős napok szürkeségét.
