This unique and stunning lodge in the lowlands of the East Sepik Province is one of the most remote and unspoiled destinations of Papua New Guinea. We spent two night here.
It stands on a lone ridge, 300 meters above the Karawari River, overlooking the river below and the endless, dense tropical rainforest.
To get here, one must fly in a charter flight to the lodge’s private airstrip, take a boat on the Karawari River, and finally drive up to the lodge on an unpaved road.
The design of the dramatic main lodge was inspired by indigenous architecture and built using local materials to resemble a traditional spirit house.
The dining and lounge areas are full of impressive Sepik artifacts.
There were ten separate thatched cottages, each cottage had two comfortable rooms with bathroom (hot and cold water), mosquito netting over the beds, ceiling fan, and a breezy shared veranda. Electricity was turned off at 10:30 pm and came on in the morning around 5 or 6.
The food was always simple but delicious. The sunsets were special.
We had a pleasant stay at Karawari Lodge, experiencing the beautiful scenery and culture.
Quite beautiful- what an amazing trip you are on!
