Despite their toxicity, foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) – with their trumpet like blossoms – have been popular in gardens for a long time. If planted en masse, they can make quite a statement. They also go by many other names: fairy gloves, fairy bells, or lady’s glove. Their colors vary from purple to pink, yellow to white. Foxglove is biennial: growing leaves only in the first year, flowering in the second. It’s also a common wildflower here in Washington State. We see them by the road in the countryside and by the forest edge.
There were many foxgloves in our garden when we first moved into our house. Over the years, their number decreased, but they still pop up here and there – they seed freely. I love their shape and colors, but I keep in mind their toxic nature.

Amikor beköltöztünk a házunkba, a kertünkben nagyon sok gyűszűvirág volt. Azóta csökkent a számuk, de mivel a gyűszűvirág szétszórja a magját, minden évben maguktól kikelnek a kert különböző pontjain. Imádom a színüket és az alakjukat, de mindig szem előtt tartom, hogy mérgezőek.
