Books, stories, and recipes – Könyvek, történetek és receptek

For me, reading is an essential and beloved activity.  It has always been and it always will be.  I used to read a lot as a kid, as a teenager often late into the night, as a college student on crowded streetcars and buses, juggling the book in one hand and holding on to the rail with the other.  I still do – all of the above.  My days don’t feel complete unless they are finished with reading.

Over the years, I’ve been reading books of many genres but never really about food.  It was only in the last two-three years, that I discovered those types of memoirs where the author shares personal reflections and stories from her life, interspersed with recipes.  These books often grew out of successful food blogs the authors started some years before.  Here is a list of recently read books in this genre.  I identified one recipe from each book I am planning to make in the near future (and possibly write about on this blog).

My Berlin Kitchen: Adventures in Love & Life, by Luisa Weiss
Zuckerkuchen (Sugar Cake)

A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table, by Molly Wizenberg
Banana Bread with Chocolate and Crystalized Ginger

Delancey: A Man, a Woman, a Restaurant, a Marriage, by Molly Wizenberg
My Kate’s Brownies

Poor Man’s Feast: A Love Story of Comfort, Desire, and the Art of Simple Cooking, by Elissa Altman
Yellow Split Pea Soup with Ham

Life from Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family, and Forgiveness, by Sasha Martin
Torta di Riso

Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals that Brought Me Home, by Jessica Fechtor
Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies

Have you read any of these books?  Did you cook or bake from them?  Can you recommend some other books in this genre?

Mindez még most is igaz.

  1. YESSSSSS! I’ve read many of those, as well. I love Molly’s books and really enjoyed Elissa’s, too. I follow both of their blogs, as well. I have enjoyed the cookbooks from many bloggers, including Megan of A Sweet Spoonful (Marge Granola), Aran Goyagoa of Cannelle Vanille, and Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen. Currently digging into Erica Strauss of Northwest Edible Life’s “A Hands-On Home” and loving every recipe I make.

    • Thanks, Kathleen. Northwest Edible Life is currently on hold for me at the library. I am looking forward to digging into it soon. I enjoyed the other books too that you mentioned.
