Summer vacation, Day 22 – Nyári vakáció, 22. nap

I’ve been waiting for this day for 5 years! But it didn’t turn out in a way I imagined.

I tested positive for COVID this morning! Bummer!

Two days ago, I still tested negative, so I was genuinely hoping, it was only a regular summer cold. But I was wrong. I found a car and I found a hotel in Dunajská Streda – all had to be canceled. I spent a big part of the day in bed. I’m a little bit low on my energies, have a small headache, stuffy and runny nose. I will try to recover as quickly as I can. This is not fun.

Consequently, tonight I’m not attending the 25th reunion with one of my former classes. This was the class IV.D (when they were seniors) with 34 students. The promise was that 20 of them would be present tonight. At reunions like this, we share what happened to us in the last 5 years. It’s a very nice custom to keep in touch with one another and I’m always honored when they invite me to a reunion. For 3 years, I taught both math and physics to them and was their “classmaster”, fulfilling the duties of a counselor and supervising this group of students. I moved to America in the summer before their senior year, so one of my colleagues took over my role as a “classmaster”. My students never developed a good relationship with him – they always invite me to their reunions!

The young woman, Zsóka, who organized this reunion, suggested that we “meet” via the messenger video feature. And that’s what we did. I talked with them for 22 minutes – what’s happened in my life in the last 5 years – and they will send me an update on their lives via email or messenger. They didn’t want to tire me out with many stories via video. It turned out that 17 of them showed up tonight. It was so nice to see them!

So, instead of a fancy dinner at a restaurant with special company, Steve and I had a simple meal in our kitchen. Off to bed now.

Does this sound like a perfect vacation to you?

Here is one photo from the 2017 reunion. The starting photo, the beautiful bouquet, is also from that event – it was part of the present I received.

So sorry to hear you have Covid! I hope Steve is well enough to make you chicken soup. Such a shame you couldn’t attend such a special event, but it’s wonderful to hear you could be there virtually. Hugs to you and best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I’m sorry to hear you got Covid. I know how much you enjoyed the event 5 years ago. It’s cool they went to the extra effort to “chat” with you. It’s sounds like a wonderful group.
