I love traditional postcards.  Picture on one side, writing on the other.  From the many that we have received for Christmas over the years, I kept a number for my personal postcard collection. These are European cards, sent to us by our family members and friends in Slovakia and Czech Republic – previously Czechoslovakia – and Hungary.

Every year around Christmas time, as I look at these cards, they always evoke good memories – especially those sent by my parents.  I can still hear my mother asking my father what she should write, my father telling her the usual words of good wishes, and I can see my mother writing them down.  Card and letter writing was always a shared activity for them.  I can imagine my mother going to the small post office of our village to mail the cards on time.  These cards always help me get into the Christmas mood.  I even use them in decorations around the house.

Even though the tradition of sending Christmas cards via post mail is becoming a little bit obsolete in the digital world, thankfully we still receive some every year.  And my sister would make the extra effort of finding the most beautifully designed, traditional Christmas card for us.

Szeretem a hagyományos képeslapokat.  Az egyik oldalon a kép, a másikon az írás.  Az évek hosszú során sok-sok karácsonyi üdvözlőlapot kaptunk, s közülük meg is őriztem jónéhányat.  Családtagok, barátok küldték ezeket Szlovákiából, Csehországból – a korábbi Csehszlovákiából – és Magyarországról.

Minden évben karácsony táján, ahogy újra elnézem ezeket a képeslapokat, mindig jó emlékeket idéznek fel – különösen, amiket a szüleim küldtek.  Még most is hallom édesanyámat, amint azt kérdezi édesapámtól, hogy vajon mit írjon.  S hallom, amint Apu a szokásos jókívánságokat sorolja, s látom, ahogy Anyu leírja a mondatokat.  A képeslap írás és levélírás mindig közös tevékenység volt számukra.  Elképzelem, amint édesanyám siet a postára, hogy idejében feladhassa az üdvözlőlapokat.  Ezek a lapok mindig segítenek ráhangolódni a karácsonyra, sőt némelyiket még a karácsonyi dekorációhoz is felhasználom.

Digitális világunkban a karácsonyi üdvözlőlapok postai küldésének szokása egyre inkább elavulttá válik.  Ennek ellenére szerencsére mi még mindig kapunk néhányat.  A hugom például évente azt az extra fáradtságot is veszi magának, hogy a legszebben megtervezett, hagyományos karácsonyi képeslapot találja meg számunkra.
