Unplanned Christmas tree – Nem tervezett karácsonyfa

“Do you want one?” a student asked me.  Not really knowing what she was offering or what I was going to do with it once I had it, I quickly said, “Yes, sure.”  I wanted to be polite.

It was my first year of teaching at Seattle Preparatory School in Seattle, WA.

There were so many new experiences and I was lost on so many occasions even when my reactions seemed natural.  The structure of my work days was different than previously in Europe.  Teaching is teaching everywhere, but suddenly there were so many small differences I needed to get used to.  One example is that at Prep students don’t stay in the same classroom for all of their classes like my students did in Europe.  Instead the teacher has her room and the students move from classroom to classroom.

I can’t remember what the season was, but it needed to be spring, the growing season.  I had a free period and spent it in the faculty lounge.  During that time, in my classroom, 210 McDonnell Hall, there was a colleague teaching religion to a group of students.  When I arrived back, there were still a few of them just leaving.  A girl, holding two or three seedlings in her hand, asked me if I wanted one.  You know my answer already.  I never learned why she had those seedlings, but I can speculate.  She probably had a presentation in class.  Maybe it was about growing physically, like a tree grows from a small seedling into a big and strong one, and like a tree, we also grow psychologically and spiritually.  And maybe she gave one seedling to all present to illustrate her point, and maybe some of her classmates were absent that day.

I took the seedling home.  Steve, who is trained in forestry, identified it as a Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and said we must plant it.  We got a pot and some dirt, and it started to grow.  First very slowly.  It survived a few years on the balcony of our apartment, and finally nine years ago landed in real soil in our garden.  Suddenly, it became a very happy little tree, growing and growing and growing, and eventually outgrowing the space under the plum tree.  Our plum tree is almost 100 years old and even though it’s not a very healthy one anymore, it still has beautiful white flowers in the spring.  We also have a huge western hemlock in our garden giving us shade in the summer.  The decision of which tree, the plum or the small Douglas fir should go, was quite easy.

When the holiday season of 2013 came, we didn’t need to go anywhere to buy a Christmas tree.  Steve could finally pretend he was a lumberjack (and that he was O.K. – referring to the song by Monty Python).  The saw was waiting in the garden shed.

What a tree we got!  It was the biggest and widest Christmas tree I ever had in my life.  I grew up with small ones and Steve with perfectly shaped ones.  But this was a natural beauty with its enormous presence in the window bay of our living room.  We loved it.  We loved its simplicity, but mainly loved the fact that we grew it, and that it was a present from someone whose name I never even knew.  I wish I could have heard her presentation on that day 17 years ago.  I wish I could let her know, she gave me such a meaningful gift.  Maybe just as accidentally as the seedling came into my life, I might accidentally find out who she is.  Then I can say thank you for the unforeseen Christmas tree and for the beautiful memory.

– Szeretnél egyet? – kérdezte a diáklány. Udvarias akartam lenni.

Első éven tanítottam a Seattle Preparatory School nevű középiskolában, Seattleben, Washington államban.

Hazavittem a palántát. Átvészelt pár évet a lakásunk erkélyén, s végül kilenc évvel ezelőtt rendes termőföldre talált a kertünkben.

A fűrész ott várt a kerti bódéban.
