Seattle’s new floating bridge – Seattle vadonatúj úszóhídja

Seattle has a new bridge!  We’ve seen it being built for five years.  Today was the grand opening.  The new SR 520 floating bridge – built by the Washington State Department of Transportation – is the longest in the world, 7710 feet.  It’s designed to last for 75 years.

Steve and I – together with many many more people – took the free shuttle bus from the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium to the new bridge.  We missed the morning fun run across it (and will be missing tomorrow morning’s bike ride across it), but we truly enjoyed the leisurely stroll across the bridge with thousands of other people.  No cars today (besides a few state patrol cars), only foot traffic.  (According to the evening TV news there were around 30,000 people who showed up to walk it).

We collected stamps at six activity centers for our passport of the day, ran into some friends, decided not to stand in the long lines for food served from five different food-trucks, learned lots of details about the bridge, enjoyed the views and the giant LEGO display, got sunburned, and stood for 1 hour and 27 minutes in a line for a shuttle to get off the bridge!  What a fun day it was!  One interesting tidbit: The bridge is named after Washington State’s former governor Albert D. Rosellini – and I taught mathematics to one of his granddaughters some years ago!

Hat különböző tevékenységi sátorban kaptunk pecsétet a megnyitóra kiállított útlevelünkbe, s összefutottunk ismerősökkel is.  Hosszú sorok kígyóztak a híd közepe táján leparkolt öt büfés autónál– mi egyikbe sem álltunk be.

  1. Thanks for sharing! It was nice running into you and Steve. We missed one stamp. The first one, oh well, we couldn’t enter anyway. 🙂 I don’t know how long we stood in line for to take the shutter of the bridge, but I know our line looped twice. The nice lady behind us share snacks with us so the kids calm down.
